THE PLM STATE

The PLM State: Measure This Part 8 (New), "And Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted"

Following our last article, Measure This Part 7, "Strap on Your Tool Belt", I thought it would be good to show you guys how Zero Wait-State believes in drinking our own champagne. This article shows the results of a recent PLM measurement survey we conducted with some of our engineering integration customers. What was unexpected, yet interesting, is that the results ended up being scattered and limited. Thus, reinforcing the fact that "not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted". The conclusion we draw from the results is that it is very difficult to quantify results after the fact.  We sent this survey out to a hundred companies that have either Engineering Collaboration or our DesignState integration between CAD PDM and PLM and the response rate was about 20%.  We noticed that many people opened the survey but did not respond. Not having baseline numbers as a basis of comparison and not identifying key performance indicators before the project began impacted the results significantly.  Going forward we intend to be more intentional around this in the hope of better quantifying the impact of having a fully integrated PLM system.
